Art Show: Scott Finch

Last night, friends Matt, Ryan, and Brennan (and I) attended an art show for a few local artists including my good friend, Scott Finch. Last year was pretty great, but this year was even better. Maybe it was the company? Hosted at the Baton Rouge Art Gallery, it's always fun to get dressed up and do something other than our typical drinking/eating routine. I guess I'm speaking for all of us when I say that we had a great time viewing the art, mingling with people who are much more funky and hipster than I'll ever be, and enjoying some hors d'oeuvres and several glasses of free wine.

Afterwards, we headed over to the Bulldog for a few beers and then (I'm embarrassed to say) to Red Zeppelin Pizza...where I ate pretty much an entire pizza. So worth it at the time...not so much now. #where'smygirdle

For Sale! - Custom Artwork

Happy Hump Day!
This is a one-of-a-kind art piece created by Beau Moss. Right now, it's "hanging out" in our office, but we're trying to sell it to a new owner soon! This is a decoupage and paint hybrid with funky colors and tons of excitement. I'd hate to see it go, but I'm really hoping it'll find a fun home.

Also, If you're a restaurant/gallery/store owner, we'd love to display this on your walls until it sells(for a % of sale price, obviously) If you're interested, please email us at TheMendedNest@gmail.com!

Art Show at the Shaw Center

Ten years ago, downtown Baton Rouge was not much more than offices and mediocre "high rises". At 5:00 on Friday, downtown would shut down and stay quiet until Monday morning. However, over the past few years, Baton Rouge's downtown has started to become much more trendy with bars, restaurants, exhibits, and events (like "Live after Five") One place that has been there since 2005 is the Shaw Center located at 100 Lafayette St. The building itself is stunning and has no comparison in Baton Rouge (or any of the surrounding cities for that matter). It's the home of wonderful restaurants, museum spaces, and the Manship Theater. It really is a place you must go to if you ever visit the city.

Saturday night, Beau, Ryan, and I headed up to the Shaw Center's 5th floor (Louisiana State University Museum of Art) to enjoy Tearing Granite: The Sculpture of Jesus Moroles. We had a really good time meeting and talking to a lot of Ryan's coworkers, looking at the artist's work...and drinking wine and eating delish appetizers.

I wasn't REALLY sure if I was allowed to take pictures, so I kind of walked around trying to sneak pictures here and there. Such a nerd!

Mended Art - Present for Jeri

Hi, Mended Nesters! All Jeri asked for this past Christmas was for us to create a piece of art to go over her buffet in the dining room. As usual, we waited until the last minute, so we started working on it just a few days before Dec. 25th. Beau and I went back and forth discussing different ideas and options, but we finally decided on what's displayed above. Just like Jeri, I'm SO pleased with the outcome. To be honest, I was a tap bit skeptical because this was really Beau's vision. I was there to just help bring his idea to fruition. Final product: fun and abstract, yet simple and chic. So here's what we did...

1. Cover a canvas in a collage made with different magazine clippings, tin foil, etc. (try to gear these around certain colors because they will show up through the paint). Cover with Mod Podge to keep it on the canvas.

2. To add texture, apply plaster to the canvas over the magazine clipping sporadically leaving gaps where the clippings show completely. There's no rhyme or reason to this part - do it however you want. Go a little crazy!

3. Once plaster is semi-dry, paint over everything with acrylic paint (Hobby Lobby, Walmart, etc.) Make sure it's a lighter color to keep your art light and fun - not dark, dreary, and heavy. I recommend applying a color around the edges then go over the whole thing in a white or off-white (which, when you apply will blend the color you used on the outside).

4. While still wet, make vertical lines using the other end of your paint brush. Make sure to apply enough pressure so that the original magazine collage shows through.

If you're interested in a custom piece of art similar to the one above, please email us for a quote at TheMendedNest@gmail.com. Talk to you soon!

White Light Night

This past Friday, we, and a bunch of our friends, attended MidCity's White Light Night. "White Light Night celebrates local and area arts while providing a safe, festive evening for thousands to meander about the MidCity area [in Baton Rouge]. The visitors renew the vibrancy of the local art scene while shopping for the upcoming holiday season [while enjoying live music at every location]."

Everyone met up at our house on Capital Heights (since we're on outskirts of Midcity) for a couple glasses of wine. Then, we headed over to join the fun, starting at our friend, Chef Don Bergeron's store for great food, more wine, and a little socializing. Don's store is in a prime location for the rest of the shops, galleries, and restaurants that participate so we didn't have to travel too far afterwards. White Light Night really is one of my favorite parts about living in the MidCity/Capital Heights area. There's so much culture and inspiration (at least compared to other parts of Baton Rouge). Unfortunately, I could't capture it's essence with the pictures it took. It's hard to snap pictures with a glass of wine in hand...the whole evening!

Art by Scott Finch

Last night, Beau and I and one of our best friends, Ryan attended an art show in Baton Rouge featuring several local artists including our friend, Scott Finch. Okay, let me see if I can get this...Scott is the husband of my friend/boss/former landlord, Angela Finch. Not only is Scott incredibly talented as an artist, but the both of two of them together are an incredibly sweet, genuine, and fun couple!

This was the first art show/viewing we had been to in Baton Rouge, and we had a great time! We love finding new things to do without having to leave the city or state. It was completely free and had several food and beverage options...could you ask for anything else? It was hosted at the Baton Rouge Art Gallery, and I think I remember someone saying this event goes on once a month - although I believe they artists that are featured vary. Regardless, we had a great time, and I hope you love the pictures we took of his art.

If you have any questions about Scott or his art, please email us at TheMendedNest@gmail.com!
